Tips for Tax Day in Montgomery County
Tax Day has arrived and as many rush to file their taxes at the last minute, experts have advice on how to avoid errors in the rush to the Post Office.
Marion Thompson, a Rockville-based CPA, says if not submitted yet, it might be best to file an extension.
“Calm down. It’s better for the computations to be right than fast,” said Thompson, president of Thompson Tax Associates, Inc. “File an extension by April 15 using Form 4868 for Federal taxes and Form 502E for Maryland taxes. Don’t forget if you expect to owe you need to make payment with the extension for it to be valid.”
The Internal Revenue Service reminds taxpayers that filing last minute can often result in mistakes. The IRS reminds taxpayers to review their returns for common errors that could delay the processing of their returns.
According to the IRS, common mistakes include mailing a paper return to the wrong address, leaving out important information like Social Security Numbers, putting the wrong routing number for a direct deposit refund, and both spouses not signing a joint return.
The Post Office at 16501 Shady Grove Road in Gaithersburg is open until 7 p.m. on April 15, but employees will be checking and collecting mail from the boxes out front every hour until midnight to process tax return mailings on deadline.

- California Tortilla is offering free queso and chips to customers that say the passcode “Taxes Shmaxes” while ordering.
