Thursday’s COVID-19 Numbers: 1,198 New Cases in Maryland, 226 in Montgomery

The Maryland Department of Health reported 226 new COVID-19 cases in Montgomery County Thursday morning. This is the largest daily increase in cases since June 4 when 302 new cases were reported. The county’s cumulative case count is 26,777.

The county has a rolling seven-day average of 3.53% for positive COVID-19 tests, which is a lower rate than 17 of Maryland’s 24 jurisdictions.

There were four COVID-19 related fatalities reported Thursday bringing the pandemic death toll for the county to 841. Prince George’s County and Montgomery County both report 841 fatalities but PG County has 7,000 more coronavirus cases in total since March. Montgomery County has 41 probable COVID-19 deaths that have not been laboratory confirmed, while PG. County has 24.

Montgomery County health officials are concerned with the increase in coronavirus infections and is focusing on three public health metrics — including daily case rate, test positivity rate, and the rate of transmission.

Each metric is evaluated daily by the health department to understand the risk of transmission. Thursday, the daily new cases per 100k residents indicates high risk, the test positivity rate indicates a low risk, and the per cent change in cases indicates a very high risk of transmission.

County Executive Marc Elrich has introduced an executive order to reinstate some restrictions to reduce the spread of the virus. The County Council must approve the executive order and they are holding public hearings Thursday. The Council plans to vote on the executive order next week.

Thursday the state recorded 1,198 new infections, bringing its cumulative total to 149,964. This is the largest daily increase in cases since July 25 when there were 1,288 new cases reported. Ten new deaths were reported Thursday, making the pandemic death toll 4,035.

Gov. Larry Hogan will provide COVID-19 updates Thursday at 5 p.m. from the state house in Annapolis. His briefing will be streamed live on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

The state reported a rolling seven-day average of 4.21% for positive COVID-19 tests Thursday.
