Three Dead, Two Injured When Plane and Helicopter Collide in Frederick
UPDATED, Oct. 24, 11:00 a.m. – Police have released the names of the three people who died when their helicopter collided with a Cirrus SR 22 airplane near the Frederick Municipal Airport Thursday afternoon.
The three victims are: Christopher D. Parsons, 29, of Westminster; William Jenkins, 47, of Morrison, Colo., and Breandan J. MacFawn, 35, of Cumberland. Investigators have determined all three men were on board the helicopter. Who was piloting the Robinson R44 helicopter has not been verified at this time, according to a Maryland State Police press release.
Two Montgomery County men were in the airplane involved in the incident, but both of them were treated and released from Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown. They are: Scott V. Graeves, 55, of Brookeville, and Gilbert L. Porter, 75, of Sandy Spring. Graeves was the pilot of the airplane and Porter was his passenger.
Neither aircraft caught fire. Who owned the aircraft and the origin and destination of each remain under investigation, according to the news release. The wreckage of both aircraft will remain at the scenes overnight. Both scenes have been secured and will remain under guard until federal investigators return in the morning, according to police.
The audio recording from air traffic control at the time of the collision was posted by LiveATC.net. The recording is disturbing and may not be appropriate for everyone to hear.
The NTSB is expected to have a briefing on the accident today, NTSB spokesman Keith Holloway told MyMCMedia Friday.
Frederick Municipal Airport Manager Rick Johnson said the airport has remained open since Thursday night. He said the air traffic controllers are contract employees through the FAA and that there is no radar in the control tower.
“They report to the tower through line of sight,” Johnson said. He added that there are two controllers on at any one time.
