Thousands Volunteer on MLK Day in Montgomery County (Photos)
From making sandwiches for the homeless to stuffing pillows for senior citizens, volunteers across Montgomery County gave back through dedicating their time to helping others in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during the national “Day of Service.”
“It’s very impressive because we have so many people out in different locations around the county,” said County Executive Ike Leggett.
“It’s wonderful to see people out here doing there this rather than out shopping and taking a leisure day instead of a day of service. We honor Dr. King by service and not by taking the day off but taking the day on and giving back to our community.”
Close to 1,700 volunteers crowded into the Bethesda Marriott Hotel on Jan. 20 where they took on more than 40 service projects to give back to the community.
“It’s a great family friendly fun day to inspire volunteerism and then you can find out more ways that you can volunteer year-round,” said Katie Sayago, Days of Service Coordinator for the Montgomery County Volunteer Center.
“It’s very exciting, there’s so much happening and everyone is really excited to be here and be a part of it,” Sayago said.
In Silver Spring, the Montgomery County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. hosted their first Day of Service event at the Civic Building.
More than 400 people took part in the event which included activities like writing letters to troops, putting together care packages for the disabled, and creating journals for children in foster care.
“I’m just excited to be able to give back to the community,” said LaTonyia Wade, president of the Montgomery County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. “We stand on public service and to be able to give back is just a wonderful feeling.”
Throughout the day’s events, 29,255 pounds of food was collected at Giant Food Stores through the Montgomery County Volunteer Center for the Help the Hungry Food Drives supporting Manna Food.
