According to Pepco’s online outage maps, the number of Montgomery County customers without power is down to just over 5,000 at 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 12.

====================================================================================

Over 16,000 Pepco customers in Montgomery County lost power during an afternoon thunderstorm on Sept. 12.

According to Pepco spokesperson Shelley Kudelka, crews were dispatched immediately. Kudelka initially reported that a substation near Pooks Hill Road in Bethesda was knocked off line during the storm and she said about half of the outages were in the surrounding Bethesda area.

In an email less than an hour later, she wrote that she had received updated information from crews in the field:

“The impacted substation is actually the Quince Orchard substation in Gaithersburg,” said Kudelka. “They also confirmed that there are pockets of outages in Bethesda, Potomac, Rockville, Kensington, Germantown and Silver Spring; as opposed to half of the outages in Bethesda. Crews continue to assess the damage and have provided no estimated restoration time, though, the number of customers without power has declined to 12,800.”

Shortly before the storm hit, the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Montgomery County.

There were reports of flooded roadways, trees down and traffic signals out. Police are warning motorists to treat dark signals as a four way stop, unless controlled by an officer.
