Thousands Attend MCPS Back to School Fair

Thousands of students, families, and community members attended the annual Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Back-to-School Fair on Saturday, August 23 at the Carver Educational Services Center in Rockville.

The rainy weather didn’t deter MCPS families from coming to the fair to learn about school system programs, get information about community resources, and have fun getting ready for the start of school.

The 2014-2015 school year begins on Monday, August 25, with more than 154,000 students expected to attend the district’s 202 schools.

“We are thrilled to have our community come together at the Back-to-School Fair to celebrate the start of a new school year,” said Superintendent of Schools Joshua P. Starr. “This was a great way for our students and their families to get the information and resources they need so they are ready for a great year.”

Among the highlights of the fair were performances by students and community groups, educational games for the entire family, appearances by local celebrities, and free health screenings. Families had a chance to participate in hands-on curriculum activities and students were able to star in their own video, which can be viewed on the MCPS TV YouTube channel.

Montgomery County government agencies and community organizations that participated in the fair included Health and Human Services; Public Libraries; the Department of Recreation; Montgomery County Fire and Rescue; the City of Rockville; Montgomery College; and the Montgomery County Council of PTAs.

“I want to thank our dedicated staff and the many volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this fair a success,” Dr. Starr said. “We are very grateful to our community sponsors and partners who support the fair and invest in the success of our students and families.”
