Thousands Attend Back to School Fair

More than 10,000 students and their families packed the grounds of Carver Educational Services Center in Rockville for the annual Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Back-to-School Fair.

More than 8,000 backpacks filled with school supplies were given to MCPS students. Parents had an opportunity to meet with MCPS staff, learn about school system programs and operations, and access information about community resources. Attendees also received gift certificates, prizes and free refreshments throughout the day.

“It was so wonderful to see our community come together at the Back-to-School Fair to celebrate the start of a new school year,” said Board of Education President Shirley Brandman. “I am confident that this is going to be a great year for our staff and students.”

Highlights of the fair included performances by student and community groups, appearances by local celebrities and free health screenings.

Montgomery County government agencies and community organizations that participated in the fair included Health and Human Services, Public Libraries, Department of Recreation, Fire and Rescue, Identity Inc., College Savings Plan of Maryland, Montgomery County Council of PTAs, and the City of Rockville.

“I want to thank our dedicated staff and volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this fair a success,” said Superintendent of Schools Joshua P. Starr. “We are grateful for our community sponsors and partners who understand the importance of supporting student achievement.”

The Back-to-School Fair was made possible by the support and generosity of local businesses and community organizations, which donated goods and services totaling more than $200,000.
