Texas Nurse Diagnosed with Ebola Virus Arrives at NIH (VIDEOS)
UPDATED The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center has admitted the first nurse who contracted the Ebola virus at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital while providing patient care to the index patient who died of Ebola.
Nurse Nina Pham has been admitted to the Special Clinical Studies Unit of the NIH Clinical Center at the request of Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital. According to NIH officials, she will receive state-of-the-art care at this high-level containment facility, which is one of a small number of such facilities in the United States.
Before she left Texas, Pham was visited by her physician who recorded a short video that Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital has posted on YouTube. In the video, Pham is seen wiping away tears and says,”Come to Maryland, everybody.”
Located in Bethesda, the NIH Clinical Center’s Special Clinical Studies Unit is specifically designed to provide high-level isolation capabilities and is staffed by infectious diseases and critical care specialists. The unit staff is trained in strict infection control practices optimized to prevent spread of potentially transmissible agents such as Ebola. No additional details about the patient are being shared at this time.
According to a NIH statement, NIH is taking every precaution to ensure the safety of its patients, staff, and the public.
On his Twitter account, Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen said he spoke with NIH Director Francis Collins about the move. “He told me NIH is specifically equipped to handle Ebola.”
Last night, Gaithersburg resident Robert Snip, a volunteer producer at Montgomery Community Media, recorded a short video of what he says are the ambulances bringing Pham to NIH. You can watch his video below:
