Takoma Park to Unveil Solar Streetlights on Sept. 7

In just a few days, the City of Takoma Park will unveil two solar streetlights installed outside of the city’s community center.

The City of Takoma Park was selected to participate in a pilot program in a partnership with UNO, a South Korean Business, and the Korean Institute for Civil Engineering and Building Technology.

Takoma Park was selected to test the lights because of its reputation as a sustainability leader throughout the region, according to a news release.

“Being chosen as a testing site for this new solar streetlight driver technology is really exciting,” said Gina Mathias, sustainability manager for the city, in a statement. “Takoma Park will be able to provide feedback which will help the company develop better, more efficient, more sustainable products to cities around the world.”

In addition to assist the city’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the solar lights will illuminate footbridges aimed to increase pedestrian safety.

Residents are invited to attend the unveiling ceremony on Sept. 7. The will be held at the Takoma Park Community Center, 7500 Maple Avenue and begins at 1 p.m.
