Takoma Park Middle Principal Responds to Incident That Led to Shelter in Place
Takoma Park Middle School principal, Alicia Deeny, sent a letter out to parents early Wednesday following an incident early this afternoon that led the school to a shelter-in-place.
A shelter-in-place plan is implemented in the event of a chemical, biological, or radiological incident, according to Montgomery County Public School’s website. After receiving notification of an incident, exterior doors are locked and individuals are not permitted to enter or exit the school until authorities terminate the emergency.
Below is the statement from Prinicpal Deeny in regards to the school’s shelter-in-place:
“Good Afternoon TPMS Parents,
“I am writing to make you aware of a situation that required us to conduct a Shelter in Place a short time ago. An individual from the community was on school grounds and was asked to leave repeatedly by school security. The Takoma Park Police (TPPD) were contacted when the individual did not comply. The individual was initially uncooperative with TPPD and school administration took the precautionary measure to call a Shelter in Place.
“During this situation our students were never in immediate danger. Students and staff remained safely inside the school while the TPPD addressed the individual and the concern was resolved. The TPPD will be on site at dismissal to further ensure the safety of our students and staff. TPPD will also be out in the community as students walk home. We will also encourage students to walk together and be aware of their surroundings.
“During a Shelter in Place the instructional day continues. However, there is an elevated level of awareness and security in the building.
“Our main priority is always student safety. We appreciated the coordination of our staff and the TPPD in taking all of the precautions to ensure that our students were safe at all times during this incident.

School officials confirmed that the shelter-in-place has been lifted.
