The NWS issued a flash flood warning for Montgomery County. It expired at 11 p.m. last night.

Thousands of Montgomery County residents were left in the dark last night as severe thunderstorms moved across Montgomery County downing trees and power lines Tuesday evening.

According to Pepco online outage maps, at the height of the storm over 12,000 customers in Montgomery County were without power.  On Wednesday morning, 89 Pepco customers in Montgomery County remained without power.

Shortly after the storms  moved across the county, the National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning that expired at 11 p.m. last night.

During 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Montgomery County fire and rescue spokesperson Pete Piringer said emergency communications was operating in “condition red” because of the volume of calls during that time period. He said dispatchers received 100 calls for service or about a third of a typical 24-hour day.

Piringer said there were multiple reports of tree damage and wires down especially in the Upcounty. According to Piringer, trees were downed in Germantown, Dickerson, Gaithersburg, Montgomery Village, Laytonsville, and Poolesville.  Police said that one man was killed when his vehicle struck a downed tree in Dickerson.

A Germantown resident told MyMCMedia that there were at least five trees down on her street.

According to an Alert Gaithersburg message, East Deer Park Drive was closed at Woodland Road  for a short time because of trees in the roadway. That road reopened a few hours later.

While some Poolesville residents  reported that they remained in the dark, the Java Cruiser, a food truck,  was preparing to begin serving coffee and breakfast to residents at 7 a.m. this morning.

Pepco officials continue to remind residents to report power outages at 1.877.737.2662.
