Street Mural on Silver Spring’s Ellworth Avenue Encourages People to Zig Zag Through

Downtown Silver Spring’s $10 million redevelopment project now includes a brightly-colored Ellsworth Drive.

The street mural is called Energy Waves and was inspired by sound and electricity waves, according to the artists Chalk Riot. The idea is to show “the slow and exciting return of our community gathering once again,” it states on a poster by the mural that is filled with swirls. It currently is roped off, but once finished, people “are invited to follow one color the whole distance.” That could include zig zagging across or even getting dizzy while going in circles, the poster states.

Chalk Riot is a woman-owned and operated public arts production company that specializes in pavement art and interactive murals.

Also on Ellsworth Drive, which is closed to vehicular traffic, the elevator leading to the second level of additional shops and restaurants is adorned with a giant wall of flowers. For $25, people are encouraged to send their thanks to front line workers and have their message featured on a flower. This fundraiser is sponsored by Adventist Health Care.
