Street Beat: SHA Crews to Resurface Four Miles of Capital Beltway

Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) crews are scheduled to begin resurfacing four miles of Capital Beltway between New Hampshire Avenue (ND 650) and Baltimore Avenue (US 1) tonight. The work is officially slated to start at 9 p.m..

According to a news release, crews will patch the roadway, remove the top layer of asphalt, apply new asphalt and install new pavement markings. Crews will be permitted to close one lane in either direction on Capital Beltway weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., and two lanes between Sundays through Thursdays from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

SHA says that more than 260,000 motorists drive on this section of the roadway each day and is encouraging drivers to plan for extra travel time.

As part of the resurfacing work and to keep crews safe, SHA will close the College Park weighing station, as well as the park and ride lot each night Sundays through Thursdays from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. SHA says motorists can use Powder Mill Road (MD 212) as an alternative during construction.

This work is part of a $12.6 million safety and rehabilitation project on Capital Beltway. Preliminary work on the project began in April and so far, crews have completed storm water inlet construction to improve roadway drainage, are installing guardrail, patching the roadway, and stabilizing roadway slopes.
