Street Beat: Germantown Delays

The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) reminds motorists of resurfacing work at the MD 355 (North Frederick Road) and MD 27 (Ridge Road) intersection in Germantown, Montgomery County. As part of the work, crews will close “one leg” of the intersection again this weekend. Local access for residents will be maintained through the entire project.

This leg of the intersection will be closed from 8 p.m. Friday, June 22 to 5 a.m. Monday, June 25 for the second part of work. SHA will redirect southbound MD 355 traffic to westbound MD 121 (Clarksburg Road), then to southbound I-270 and eastbound MD 27. All work will be cleared before Monday morning rush hour.

Arrow boards, portable electronic message boards and other signage will direct motorists through detour routes for all phases of construction.

SHA is grinding the existing pavement layers and using a special high strength concrete mix called “whitetopping.” The weekend closures will provide crews time to remove all layers of pavement, apply whitetopping to the roadway and allow for proper curing (hardening) of the material before Monday morning. SHA’s contractor for the $1.2 million project is Concrete General, Inc. of Gaithersburg. The next phase of work is scheduled on northbound MD 355 between Henderson Corner Road and Ridge Road during the weekends of June 29 and July 6.
