Strathmore Summer Concerts Return on June 26

Strathmore’s annual free summer outdoor concert series begins June 26 with “Songs of Summer.” The concerts take place at the Gudelsky Concert Pavilion Gazebo at 5301 Tuckerman Lane, North Bethesda on Wednesdays through August 14. All concerts begin at 7 p.m. The venue is located across the street from the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro Station. Parking is $5 in the Metro garage. Accessible parking is available on-site on a space available basis. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets or low beach chairs.

Food is available at the BBQ Shack if you want to enjoy a picnic dinner. BBQ ribs, pulled pork, veggie burgers, hot dogs, side dishes, desserts, soda, water and beer and wine are available for purchase starting at 5:30 p.m.

Strathmore is partnering with Hungry for Music, an organization dedicated to providing young people with instruments. You can donate used instruments all summer long.

Wednesday, June 26
“Songs of Summer” feature the 2012-2013 Artists in Residence (AIR). Each young artist will perform a favorite summer piece plus an original composition. The artists include Debora Bond, progressive soul vocalist; Owen Danoff, singer-songwriter; Isabelle De Leon, jazz drummer; Integriti Reeves, jazz vocalist; and Wytold, electric celloist.

Wednesday, July 3
M.A.K.U. Soundsystem features traditional Colombian music with a futuristic spin. Get ready for the harmonic convergence of maracas, gaitas and big drums with guitar, bass, synthesizer and horn section. Dancing on the grounds is encouraged.

Daryl Davis’ Roots Music Revue features veteran Strathmore performer, Daryl Davis who has performed in 49 of the 50 states for this summertime bluesfest. Fingerstyle guitarist Tim Sparks from Minnesota; boogie woogie & blues pianist, Chase Garrett from Iowa; lap steel player Mary Flower from Oregon; D.C.’s own Angela Hill—and Daryl Davis himself for a soulshaking, rocking good time.

Alma Tropicalia features lead singer Elin and the band! Alma Tropicalia features traditional Brazilian rhythms blend with samba, bossa nova, forró and a touch of rock ‘n’ roll to create spectacular summer music magic.

Trouble Funk features D.C.’s iconic go-go band. Up-tempo 70’s funk meets a 60’sstyle horn section and explodes in an urban energy that keeps everyone on their feet. For decades Trouble Funk has been the go-go for gogo.

Wednesday, July 31
Jonathan Scales Fourchestra features classically-trained composer and the leader of a jazz fusion ensemble you will not want to miss. Jonathan Scales brings the bright and buoyant jazz sounds of Fourchestra (with drummer Phil Bronson and bassist Cody Wright) to Strathmore for a unique and dynamic show.

Wednesday, August 7
Carlos Núñez features beguiling Spanish musician Carlos Núñez playing the gaita, the traditional Galician bagpipe. His unique and amazing folk music showcases his native region of Galicia, in northwest Spain, and the surprising Celtic traditions that thrive there. Expect jigs and reels, played on bodhran, fiddle and pipes with a wonderful Latin flair.

Wednesday, August 14
Ukefest 2013 featuring the summertime tradition that launched a thousand musicians: the annual celebration of the ukulele that rocks Strathmore and brings the community together in song. Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer, Gerald Ross, Lil’ Rev, Stuart Fuchs and The Hula Honeys lead this concert that’s filled with fun and audience participation. Bring your ukulele and join in.
