State Sen. Will Smith Endorses Fellow Veteran Buttigieg
Maryland State Sen. Will Smith (D-Dist. 20) has endorsed former South Bend, Ind. Mayor Pete Buttigieg to become the Democratic presidential nominee.
In a statement, Smith said, “Our country is changing and we need a leader that is prepared on day one to not only lead but unite Americans from all walks of life. It’s more important for my president to have a vision and a plan for the next generation than to have spent a generation in a broken and polarized Washington.”
@PeteButtigieg has demonstrated an incredible ability to both overcome challenges and unite Americans around their shared values. That’s why I am proud to endorse Pete Buttigieg, veteran and servant leader, for President of the United States.

Both Smith and Buttigieg are both Veterans of the Afghanistan war. Currently, Smith serves on Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee and he was the former director at the Department of Homeland Security under President Barack Obama.
“Whether it was leading the economic transformation of a Rust Belt city or serving his country overseas, Pete Buttigieg is the only candidate to have demonstrated an incredible ability to overcome the challenges facing our communities and unite Americans around their shared values. That’s why I am proud to endorse Pete Buttigieg, veteran and leader, to be the next President of the United States,” Smith said.
Buttigieg has also been endorsed by Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman. Earlier this week Rep. Jamie Raskin announced his support for Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s (D-Mass.) candidacy.
