Hogan Extends Order to Stop Utility Shutoffs, Late Fees

Gov. Larry Hogan extended his executive order barring utility service charges, late fees or shut offs until Aug. 1 or the end of Maryland’s state of emergency, if that happens first.

No electric, gas, sewage disposal, telegraph, telephone, water, cable television company or internet service provider may terminate service to customers or charge fees under Hogan’s executive order.

I have extended the emergency order prohibiting utility providers from shutting off or charging late fees for residential services, including electricity, water, phone, and internet, through August 1.

Hogan first issued an executive order on March 16. He then renewed it on April 29 and May 29.

Hogan explained in the executive order that for health reasons during the global pandemic, “it is necessary and reasonable” that fees and shut offs should not take place.
