Spirit Take On University of Maryland April 5

The Washington Spirit will meet University of Maryland in a charity match to benefit Headers for Hope April 5 at 7 a.m. at the Maryland Soccerplex in Boyds.

In their first preseason match March 22, the Spirit overtook University of North Caroline 2-0. Both goals came in the second half. The first goal was made unassisted by Canadian Women’s National midfielder midfielder, Diana Matheson. The second goal of the preseason was scored by striker Tiffany Weimer and assisted by Matheson.

Last week the Spirit were challenged against University of Virginia, the 2013 ACC team of the year. UVA’s Alexis Shaffer scored in the 10th minute of the first half. However, the match ended in a 1-1 draw. Spirit defender, Toni Presley was able to capitalize from a missed clearance on a set piece and get on the scoreboard.

This Saturday, April 5 the Washington Spirit will face the University of Maryland Women in a match played for charity. The match’s proceeds will go to Headers for Hope. Headers For Hope is a nonprofit organization established by Louise Waxler to help support the family and friends of those battling cancer.

Headers for Hope was established in honor of every individual who has been diagnosed with cancer; every family member who has held the hand of their loved one being treated for cancer; and all friends acting as a support system to someone who has been told the news they have cancer. Unfortunately, cancer more often than not hits home. This is our opportunity to give back.”

For the Washington Spirit this is a very special match as it is the last match of the preseason and it’s cause is very near and dear to the team.

Come cheer on your Washington Spirit and help a great cause. The match starts at 7 p.m. at the Maryland SoccerPlex. Tickets purchased in advance are $10 and $15 at the gate. One hundred percent of the gate will go towards Headers for Hope!
