Spirit Face Rematch with Top Ranked Seattle
With momentum from last weekend’s victory over Chicago, the Washington Spirit host NWSL first-place Seattle Reign FC this Saturday at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, MD. Match time is slated for 6:30 p.m. The match up will be the second time the two teams face each other this season with the first resulting in a 3-1 Reign win just last week.
The Spirit are coming off of a 1-0 road win against the Chicago Red Stars that saw defender Tori Huster head home her first goal of the season and help the team defend its first shutout of 2014.
The Reign come into Saturday’s match after a mid-week win at Sky Blue FC on Wednesday 2-0. The Reign had two new players on the score sheet that night, as forwards Beverly Goebel and Nahomi Kawasumi each notched one goal.
The last time these two teams met, the Reign topped the Spirit 3-1. Goals for the Reign were scored by Kendall Fletcher, Jess Fishlock and Kim Little, with Diana Matheson getting the lone goal off a penalty kick for the Spirit. Matheson’s goal gave the Spirit momentum, bringing them within one. In the dying minutes of the game, Fishlock put the game away with a long-distance shot from outside the 18-yard box.
“We will be looking forward to a tough game against Seattle this Saturday,” said head coach Mark Parsons. “It will be an exciting challenge and one the fans will not want to miss. We are feeling great after a brave performance and important result away in Chicago last Saturday and will look to build on that this weekend. Can’t wait to see the Spirit Family out in full force cheering us on.”
Saturday’s match will be played at the SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md. and streamed online at www.youtube.com/NWSL.
