Spiegel Files Paperwork for District 3 Council Seat (Photos)

speigel1Gaithersburg resident Ryan Spiegel visited the Board of Elections office on Jan. 17 to begin filing paperwork for his candidacy for the District 3 Montgomery County Council seat. Spiegel is currently a two-term Gaithersburg City Councilmember.

“I am very excited to have the momentum in this race early,” Spiegel said at the BOE office on Jan. 17, as he purchased a copy of the District 3 map, which includes details of the communities he hopes to represent.

In addition to completing his candidate information sheet, Spiegel made an audio recording of his name for voters who are visually impaired and he picked up a copy of the detailed financial disclosure statement that must be submitted by all candidates to the Montgomery County Ethics Commission. He said he plans to complete the disclosure forms and submit them this week.

“I’m excited about the strength of our campaign and the breadth of our early support,” said Spiegel in a news release. “We are fully committed to work as hard as we can to win this race. I have an extensive record as a legislator who can work with others and deliver concrete results for our communities, and I am confident that I’m the best candidate to move Montgomery County forward.”

So what’s next for Spiegel?

“After today, we keep the momentum going. We hit the ground already running with door knocking campaigns, with fundraising, and with sharing my vision for the county and my views on important policy issues. And also, most importantly, listening to the voters to find out what they have to say.”

District 3 includes Rockville, Gaithersburg, Leisure World, Washington Grove, and parts of Aspen Hill, Derwood, Potomac and North Potomac. Montgomery County Councilmember Phil Andrews currently holds the seat. Andrews is running for County Executive in 2014 and has said he will not seek to retain his Council position.

Candidates have until February 25 to file. Although no candidate is officially listed on the 2014 Maryland state elections website at this writing, Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney Katz has announced he is planning to run for the Council seat, too.

The Primary election is set for June 24.
