Something Different About These Olympics…

Image of Merlyn Reineke, Executive Director of Montgomerey Community MediaIt’s been a blast watching the London Olympics this month. I can’t help but get a lump in my throat when I hear our national anthem being played, or a sense of pride when our young athletes perform under such intense pressure. Montgomery County’s own Katie Ledecky, all of 15 years old, really made things exciting when she blew away the field and brought home a swimming Gold Medal… amazing!

One thing that I found most interesting and very different about these most recent Olympics was something I spotted on the TV coverage, just moments after Serena Williams finished her Gold Medal-winning Singles tennis match. The camera was fixed on Serena in celebration, but in the stands behind her were about 40-50 fans within camera shot… and nearly EVERY ONE had their smart phones trained on Serena, capturing stills or video of her winning moment. Gone are the days when you’d see flash bulbs popping… replaced with the glint of camera phones everywhere. It seems that new technology is allowing anyone the opportunity to cover the events of their world, to save & to share however they wish.

Today, we each can capture the moments great & small we see right here in Montgomery County. And while it may not be Michael Phelps’ last swim, it’s no less important to capture your child’s first swim… or a tree blocking your neighborhood road during a recent storm. Such events are ‘news to you’, and of interest to others right here in Montgomery County. Our new mymcmedia.org website allows you the chance to share those moments with a million folks right here in our county. Snap a photo, write a blog, upload a video… it’s up to you to share what’s on your mind and going on in your world. Have fun and let your voice be heard!
