Soccer Stars Party (Photos)

Ingleside at King Farm hosted a welcome party for two of its newest residents on March 28.

Professional soccer players Diana Matheson and Robyn Gayle of the Washington Spirit are now calling the retirement community home.

The star soccer players were teammates on Canada’s bronze medal winning 2012 Olympic soccer team. Matheson is probably best known for kicking the winning goal against France in overtime for the bronze medal.

Now, the women athletes are living in Montgomery County and sharing a two-bedroom suite at Ingleside for the Spirit’s soccer season.

Ingleside Executive Director Marilyn Leist introduced the athletes to their new neighbors at the welcome party that featured lemonade and cookies.

The average Ingleside resident is 82-years old, according to employees who work there. That was big news to the soccer players who said their neighbors seem much younger. Their senior neighbors said they could not be more excited about their younger (20-something) neighbors.

The Washington Spirit’s first home game is on April 20 against the Western New York Flash and several Ingleside residents told us they plan to be in the stands cheering their neighbors on to victory. The players told us they really want to win for their new neighbors who are now some of their biggest fans.

Until then, residents are enjoying socializing with the soccer stars in the hallways, during meals in the dining room and at the pool, etc.
