‘Snow is Expected to be Heaviest in the Afternoon’
State highway crews are loaded up and ready to confront the latest winter blast scheduled to come through Maryland all day today. Last night crews filled their trucks with salt, pre-treated roads and then settled in for what promises to be a busy day.
As crews prepare, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) reminds travelers to prepare for their safety and the safety of others.
The snow is expected to fall throughout the day beginning with the morning rush hour, making the potential for treacherous commutes probable, with the worst occurring during the evening rush hour.
Snow emergency plans are in effect in Allegany County. Truck drivers who encounter problems can access emergency parking at park and ride locations. Those locations can be found on SHA’s website at www.roads.maryland.gov.
“If you can stay home today, please do so. If you must go out, try to wrap up your plans early to be settled in before this afternoon,” said SHA Administrator Melinda B. Peters. “While out, give yourself plenty of time and drive to the conditions of the road. The snow is expected to be heaviest in the afternoon so caution is urged all day long.”
SHA provided these tips to make your travel safer:
• Prepare ahead. Clear your vehicle of ice and snow before heading out. You want to see and make sure other drivers can see you.
• When on the road, use caution when merging at ramps and intersections, and remain alert for pedestrians and cyclists.
• Wipers On? Lights On. It’s the Law
• Emergency trucking parking will be available if weather conditions deteriorate. The map with locations is available at www.roads.maryland.gov.
• If your vehicle becomes disabled, make every effort to move safely from the travel lane and onto the shoulder.
