Smith Gets Raise Bringing Salary to $290,000
School Superintendent Jack Smith received a $15,000 raise from the Montgomery County Board of Education, putting his salary at $290,000.
“It put him in comparable range with other superintendents at large systems in the Washington D.C. area,” school board member Pat O’Neill said.
Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Scott Braband also makes $290,000.
Montgomery County has the largest enrollment of any school system in Maryland, and it’s ranked 16th nationwide by ProximityOne, an Alexandria, Virginia, company that tracks demographics. ProximityOne ranks the Fairfax system 11th.
O’Neill said no objections to the raise had been sent to her personal email account or the Montgomery school board’s general account.
Montgomery County Young Republicans objected to the pay raise, citing last year’s property tax increase, sexual harassment allegations, abuse by teachers and poor scores in state-mandated tests.
“The problem at MCPS is not revenue, it is how it is spent and if this process is not fixed this out of control spending will continue. It goes back to the question are we getting our money’s worth right now at Montgomery County Public Schools?” the organization said in a statement.
Teachers could have used a $15K raise. Durso said “It’s important for us to acknowledge all that you have done for us,” . Hmm, think it’s important that they acknowledge all that teachers have done for kids, despite his leadership.
