Small Business Awards Set For May 9

The Montgomery County Department of Economic Development (DED) today announced that Karen Zuckerman, chief creative director and president of Rockville-based HZDG, a full service integrated marketing communications agency, will be the keynote speaker for the 2014 Montgomery County Small Business Awards ceremony on May 9. The event will take place at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, 5701 Marinelli Rd., North Bethesda.

Zuckerman leads both the creative and corporate vision of HZDG, the agency she launched from her basement in the late 1980s. More than 20 years later, she employs a creative and talented team of more than 100 in offices in Rockville and New York. HZDG clients include Bozzuto, Brooks Brothers, Ryan Homes, Volkswagen and the Washington Redskins.

“We are extremely proud to again this year recognize and honor the many achievements of our small business community; they are the backbone of our local economy,” said DED Director Steve Silverman. “Our department presents these annual awards as a small but important recognition of the hard work, sacrifice and ultimate success found behind the doors of our more than 33,000 local small businesses. We are honored to have home-grown entrepreneur Karen Zuckerman provide the keynote for what we know will be an exciting event.”

The Montgomery County Small Business Awards were initiated by DED last year to celebrate the achievements of local small businesses that contribute to the strength of the area’s economy and job growth. This year’s event fittingly precedes National Small Business Week May 12-16, 2014.

The Awards were recently expanded to recognize businesses in 11 categories – including the newly added Nonprofit of the Year Award recognizing an outstanding organization in the nonprofit sector. This award reflects the vital role nonprofits play in our local economy, employing 9.7% of the County’s workers with an annual payroll of more than $2 million in 2011. Nominations will be accepted online in all 11 categories through 3 p.m. on April 9.
