Small Business Awards Honors Eight Companies (Photos)

Over 300 companies joined Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett (D) and Steve Silverman, the director for the county’s economic department, in honoring eight local businesses at the Small Business Awards on May 24.
Out of the 60 business entries, the county chose eight businesses which represented innovation, creativity among other qualities.
“Supporting small businesses is one of the top priorities of our government. We recognize your importance, we want you, we recognize the importance of your businesses. We want to do whatever we can to assist you,” Leggett said.
The local businesses that were honored for their work included:
- Creatv MicroTech was recognized as the Bioscience Company of the Year. Cha-Mei Tang is the founder and president for the company. In this MCM extra video, she talked about how her company has developed a technique to help cancer patients receive specialized treatment.
- Wedding Wire was recognized as the Information Technology Company of the Year. In this MCM extra video, Timothy Chi—the creator of one the nation’s largest wedding services website—talks about his inspiration for creating his company.
- SOL VISTA Consulting was recognized as the Innovation Network Company of the Year. In this MCM extra video, Shannon Sentman and Zack Moore talk about how they save hotels and other companies money by making them more environmentally sustainable.
- SPAGnVola was recognized as the Small Business of the Year. Chocolatiers Eric and Crisoire Reid of SPAGnVola started their business in 2011. In this MCM extra video, they talk about owning the process from the coco tree to the creation of their delectable goods.
- Zane Networks was recognized as the Small Business of the Year. In this MCM extra video, Luigi Leblanc and Alexandra Jellerette talk about the niche services they provide to businesses in the healthcare industry.
- Apex Home Loans was recognized as the Small Business of the Year. In this MCM extra video, Eric Gates—the president of the company—talked about how he loves helping people achieve the American dream by refinancing their homes and saving them money.
- Gator Ron’s Zesty Sauces & Mixers was recognized as the Start Up Business Of the Year. In this MCM extra video, Debbie Kaufmann and Connie Griffith talk about how the sauces were made in the honor of Ron Griffith, Connie’s husband. He died after a battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) commonly known as the Lou Gehrig’s disease.
- Merry Maids of Gaithersburg was recognized as the Workforce Development Award. Fabiola Cornacchia and Ruth Silva of Merry Maids accepted the award for the company. In this MCM extra video, they talk about how the company runs on family-oriented principles and that’s why they are so successful.
