A Montgomery Village resident said he wanted to use the internet for good, so he started a fundraising drive to collect money to give sleeping bags to the homeless.

His gofundme drive has raised enough money for 100 sleeping bags and he’s delivered about half around the District of Columbia. Other sleeping bags will be delivered in Montgomery County, he said.

“In 2018, I wanted to create something positive,” said Kendall Haley, a 2007 Good Counsel High School graduate.

Started a month ago, he was seeking $1,750 for the sleeping bags; he made the goal in three weeks. On Wednesday evening, he had raised $2,490 – the excess money will go a second batch of sleeping bags, he said.

“We’re trying to keep this going year round so we can help as many homeless people as possible,” Haley said.

On Wednesday, he was driving around D.C., around Dupont Circle, and 14th and U streets, handing out the sleeping bags.

The drive grew out of the work he does with his company FADED Ambition. The company produces urban street wear, but it also works with Montgomery County youths telling them to follow their dreams.

He said he also wanted to help the world out, and the sleeping bags could be a form a shelter.

Through FADED Ambition, which Haley started with partner and childhood friend Daniel Wilson, the two have made contacts with suppliers overseas. One of the suppliers made the sleeping bags, from a Haley design, Haley said.

And Haley and Wilson have turned their efforts into the #100sleepingbags challenge. He has singled out Tyler Perry, the actor, comedian and filmmaker for the first challenge. He’s offered to send Perry five sleeping bags to hand out to five homeless people.

He plans to single out another celebrity this weekend.
