Silver Spring Transit Center Update to Council
The Montgomery County Council at noon on Thursday, May 8, will receive an update on the status of needed remediation on the delayed Silver Spring Transit Center. Since the last update from the County’s Executive Branch, a report was received on the center from an independent advisory committee headed by Norman Augustine, the retired chair and CEO of Lockheed Martin. County Executive Isiah Leggett appointed that committee.
County Chief Administrative Officer Tim Firestine and director of the Department of General Services David Dise are among those expected to attend the session in the Third Floor Hearing Room of the Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville. The session will be televised live by County Cable Montgomery (CCM—Cable Channel 6 on Comcast and RCN, Channel 30 on Verizon). The broadcast also will be streamed at:

The committee headed by Mr. Augustine was asked to evaluate the plans to complete the transit center. The committee has recommended addressing the shear/torsion and deck-cracking issues before the center is opened. The committee estimates the cost of this work to be about $11 million and that it will take 8-10 months to complete if started now. If that plan is followed, it is likely the center would open in early 2015. However, the work might be completed within five months if the work is done in multiple shifts and on weekends, but this would come at a higher cost that the study does not specify.
At 3 p.m., the Montgomery County and Prince George’s County councils will hold their annual joint meeting at the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) headquarters in Laurel. The councils will discuss several bi-county issues regarding the WSSC and the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission.
The County Council’s last briefing on the center was April 8.
