Silver Spring Mini Maker Faire (Video)
KID Museum, a new children’s museum, will host the Silver Spring Maker Faire, a free family festival celebrating innovation and creativity, on Sunday, September 14 at the Silver Spring Civic Building from noon – 5 p.m.
The Maker Faire, which attracted an estimated 12,000 people at its inaugural event last year, brings the energy and excitement of the global “maker movement” to the Washington, D.C. region. It will feature creative hands-on science, engineering, electronics, and arts and crafts activities for children and adults. Washington, D.C. area inventors, hackers, crafters, artists, and do-it-yourselfers of all kinds will engage the public in a variety of “maker” projects at more than 90 booths, which will include:
- Robots of all shapes and sizes
- Bi-copters, rockets, remote-controlled blimps, and other flying machines
- 3D printed jewelry and innovations to support scientific research
- Stations to make your own video game
- Lego car building and racing
- Felt-making and fabric arts projects
- Automated chess boards
- NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope astronaut tools and gloves and more!
There will be food, performances, and dynamic talks by local inventors who will present their unique and cutting edge projects.
KID Museum’s Maker Faire will preview many of the activities which will be offered this fall at its new MakerSpace location at Davis Library in Bethesda. Through hands-on exhibits and programs that incorporate science, technology, engineering, math and art, KID Museum will cultivate children’s natural creativity and curiosity. At this year’s first-ever White House Maker Faire, KID Museum was one of two museums recognized for its role in expanding “maker” programs in its community.
The Silver Spring Maker Faire is free and open to the public. The event is accessible by the Silver Spring Metro station. Free parking is available in the nearby Town Center and Wayne Avenue garages. For more information, visit www.makerfairesilverspring.com.
