Silver Spring Middle Schooler Found Unresponsive in School Bathroom

A seventh grade student at Colonel E. Brooke Lee Middle School in Silver Spring died Monday from what Montgomery County Public Schools officials say are self-inflicted injuries.police-line-do-not-cross-for-slider-450x280-150x150

Detectives from Montgomery County Police-Major Crimes Division are investigating the death as a suicide.

At about 2:29 p.m., 4th District officers and Fire Rescue Personnel were dispatched to E. Brooke Lee Middle School at 11800 Monticello Ave. in Silver Spring. A male student had been found unresponsive in a bathroom. He was transported to the hospital where he died.

Police have not released the student’s identity.

Montgomery County Public Schools released the following statement to MyMCMedia- “This afternoon, at about 2:30 p.m., school officials discovered that a student had locked himself in a school bathroom at E. Brooke Lee Middle School and had harmed himself. 911 was called and police and emergency personnel responded. The student, a grade 7 male, was transported to the hospital and family was contacted. The student died from his injuries.

The Montgomery County Police Department is investigating the matter and MCPS is cooperating fully with their investigation. The school has notified the community of what occurred through a recorded phone call that was sent around 5 p.m. (the text of that message is included below). Additional counselors and school psychologists will be at E. Brooke Lee Middle School tomorrow to speak to students and staff who are struggling with this tragedy at the school.

At this time, we are not releasing the name of the student or any other information. Our focus is on supporting all those who have been affected by this tragedy and our thoughts are with the family, friends and loved ones of the young man who died today.”

Below is the information sent via a recorded message to the Brooke Lee Middle School families-

“This is Kimberly Hayden Williams, principal of Col. E. Brooke Lee Middle School. I am writing to inform you of a tragic incident that occurred at our school today. At approximately 2:30 p.m. , a student harmed himself in a school bathroom. Because of the severity of the injuries sustained, emergency personnel were called and responded. The school was placed into a Shelter-in-Place to ensure everyone remained in their locations and emergency personnel could assist the student. The student was transported to the hospital and his parents were notified. I am saddened to report that the student died from his injuries. Other students quickly became aware of the incident. We will have counselors at the school tomorrow and for several days to provide support to students and staff. I will provide more information to you as it becomes available.
