Silver Screen Series Returns to Silver Spring on Friday Nights (VIDEO)

istock movies outdoorUPDATED A series of free Friday outdoor movies shown on a large screen on Veterans Plaza in downtown Silver Spring will continue on Sept. 9, with the showing of Paris Blues.

Montgomery County Councilmember Tom Hucker is one of the sponsors of the “Silver Screen,” series.

“Free outdoor movies have popped up all across the Washington region and now you can add Silver Spring to the mix,” said Hucker. “‘Silver Screens’ is a great opportunity for families to enjoy the warm summer nights with friends and neighbors, grab dinner at any of our local eateries and see a wide array of films. I am excited to work with the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center and Department of Recreation to present this programming for our community.”

Veterans Plaza is located at the intersection of Ellsworth Drive and Fenton Street, adjacent to the Silver Spring Civic Building. Movies begin after dusk, between 8 and 8:30 p.m. Free parking after 7 p.m. is available in the nearby County parking garages. Attendees should bring low-rise chairs or blankets for seating.

In addition to Councilmember Hucker, sponsors of the new film series include the Montgomery County Department of Recreation and the Silver Spring Urban District. The films are being presented by AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center.

“The AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center is committed to engaging with the greater Silver Spring community so we are excited to collaborate with Councilmember Hucker to bring outdoor movies back this summer,” said Ray Barry, director of the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center. “We are excited about our diverse lineup of films, starting with Disney’s Frozen, then the much acclaimed documentary When We Were Kings, followed by Back to the Future and finally, in collaboration with the Silver Spring Jazz Festival, Paris Blues. We hope that families come out and enjoy Silver Screens, and hope to make this an annual summer event the community looks forward to.”

Whole Foods Market Silver Spring is selling snacks on the plaza for all of the screenings. For the first time on Veterans Plaza, Denizens Brewing Company and Adega Wine Cellars & Café and will be offering beer and wine for sale as well.

“We are proud to be part of bringing back outdoor movies to Veterans Plaza and we are looking forward to introducing more community members to our great wines,” said Antonio Williams, manager of Adega Wine Cellars & Cafe.

“Denizens is proud to be part of bringing back outdoor movies to downtown Silver Spring,” said Julie Verratti, co-founder of Denizens. “We are honored to partner with AFI and look forward to connecting with the community and introducing more folks to our beer.”
