small business saturday for slider 450x280The Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), Maria Contreras-Sweet, is encouraging Americans across the country to shop small on November 29th as part of Small Business Saturday, a day that is dedicated to supporting the small businesses that anchor local communities and strengthen the economy.

As a member of President Barack Obama’s Cabinet, the SBA Administrator is reminding American’s to not only shop small on Small Business Saturday, but to even start with their Thanksgiving dinner items at local grocers, shop small at their Main Street businesses and dine small at their neighborhood restaurants.

On Monday, Contreras-Sweet will visit an immigrant- and veteran-owned small business grocer in Silver Spring to highlight the impact of entrepreneurs on the economy.

In Maryland, independent grocers generate $2.27B in annual sales and are responsible for over 20,000 jobs and wages of $872.75 million. According to the SBA, that fuels $218 million in state and local budget, and almost $200 million in federal resources.

According to the SBA, the weekend after Thanksgiving is considered the busiest shopping weekend of the year, and many small businesses rely on the holiday shopping period to ensure a successful year on the books.
