SHA Urges Motorists to Avoid Travel During Rush Hour
The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) is urging motorists to plan ahead and make alternative plans to avoid travel Friday morning due to a snow storm expected during rush hour. SHA crews will be out prior to the storm and have pre-treated roadways with salt brine. Forecasters are predicting the storm will change to rain in mid-morning.
“Snow during the rush hour is the worst possible scenario since salt trucks are in the same traffic congestion as everyone else and we cannot treat roadways,” said SHA Administrator Gregory Johnson. “Know Before You Go by checking MD511.org and don’t go if it is snowing. Delay travel until after the storm passes.”
SHA crews spent Wednesday and Thursday pre-treating interstates and major roads, which will help prevent the initial bonding of snow and ice to the pavement. Since the storm is expected to begin this evening, SHA and contractor crews will stage and monitor for the onset of the storm and treat accordingly.
