SHA to Close Portion of Sligo Creek Parkway in Takoma Park

Road Construction Cones for featured imageAs part of the Carroll Avenue bridge reconstruction project, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will temporarily close and detour traffic on a one-third mile section of Sligo Creek Parkway beginning at 9 a.m. on Monday morning.

Crews are scheduled to reopen the roadway by 3 p.m. The closures, between Old Carroll Avenue and Maple Avenue, will continue each weekday for approximately two weeks. According to the SHA, the road closures and detours are necessary for the delivery of 70 steel beams for the $10.6 million MD 195 (Carroll Avenue) Bridge over Sligo Creek reconstruction project in Takoma Park.

To expedite safe delivery of the steel beams for work crews and the traveling public, SHA will close Sligo Creek Parkway weekdays and detour traffic using Old Carroll Avenue, MD 195, Lincoln Avenue and Maple Avenue. Weather permitting, the steel deliveries should be complete by early April.

“Now that construction season is underway, it is even more important that drivers slow down when traveling through work zones,” said Brian Young, SHA District 3 engineer. “This work is taking place during non-peak hours on weekdays; drivers should plan ahead and keep their eyes open for the color orange, the color of our construction signs, cones, barrels and fencing. We ask that they use extra caution for workers’ safety as well as their own.”

To date, crews have relocated utilities and constructed a temporary bridge for ingress and egress of construction equipment inside the work zone. Weather and progress permitting, the entire project should be complete late fall 2017, according to the SHA.
