Sewage Flows into Gaithersburg Lake
Officials with the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) said tree roots blocked a sewer line in a wooded area, near 11509 Golden Post Lane in Gaithersburg, causing a sanitary sewage overflow (SS0) from a manhole into Clopper Lake.
According to a press released posted on the WSSC website, the overflow began at 2:18 p.m. on Jan. 29 and ended at 8 p.m. that evening.
An estimated 10,260 gallons of untreated wastewater entered Clopper Lake, according to the information released by WSSC.
The utility reports it is conducting a closed circuit television inspection to check the sewer line for other potential problems. WSSC said notifications have been made to the Maryland Department of the Environment and the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection.
Ten signs were posted warning citizens to avoid the overflow area.
WSSC crews were planning to restore the affected area on Jan. 30.
