Senior Services Expanded
Seniors are getting more services in the county thanks to the expansion of programming.
Expanded services include adding evening hours to the Holiday Park Senior Center on Wednesdays until 9 p.m., extending programming at Margaret Schweinhaut Center from five to six days per week, and increasing the operational hours at the Damascus Senior Center by eight hours per week.
In January 2014, the Recreation Department launched the new Senior Center Shuttle transportation program that provides curb-to-curb service to and from the County’s five senior centers. The service offers a fixed route service free to adults 55 and older who live within a defined geographical radius of each center.
“As the County moves toward a greater demographic of residents over the age of 55, the Recreation Department is purposefully shifting services to better serve our older adult population,” said Montgomery County Recreation Director Gabriel Albornoz. “Increasing senior center hours, enhancing transportation opportunities and providing wellness programming during evening and weekend hours will help continue our efforts to make Montgomery County a community for a lifetime.”
Montgomery County Recreation’s Senior Program provides a wide range of services, including five full- service senior centers and 13 Active Adult Programs (formerly called Neighborhood Senior Programs). Programming available to seniors includes classes, health and wellness activities, sports, fitness, trips and tours, and special events. Programs are geared toward very active adults in their 50s and 60s and older seniors who need modified classes and programs.
