Senator Mikulski’s “Summing Up Speech” (VIDEO)

Senator Barbara Mikulski, the longest serving woman in Congressional history, delivered her “summing up speech” today.

It was a trip down memory lane for Mikulski, who recalled her roots in Baltimore and the neighborhood cause that changed the direction of her life.

“I have served in elected public office for 45 years; more than half of my life has been in elected public service,” said Mikulski, who served 30 years in the United States Senate, ten years in the House of Representatives and five years on the Baltimore City Council.

“I want to rise today to thank the people of Maryland,” Mikulski said. “You know when people vote for you, it is not only that they are sending you to Washington or sending you to City Hall, they are giving you a vote of confidence, that you will be their voice, that you will be their vote, that you will be at their side and on their side.”

Mikulski talked about her supporters, those who helped her get elected and those who helped her govern.

“Behind me is a whole lot of we,” she said. “I got started in public life because of volunteers and activists.”

“After 45 years though, it is time for me to say goodbye to elected office but not to service,” said Mikulski.

As for her future, she said she is going to learn something new and give something back everyday.
