Sec. of Energy Visits Pepco in Rockville

U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu treated Pepco field workers to coffee and doughnuts Thursday, Nov. 1 to thank them for their hard work to restore power to customers whose service was interrupted by Hurricane Sandy.

Chu dropped in to morning planning meetings for about 60 Pepco employees at the Rockville Service Center. Pepco had all hands on deck working around the clock to restore power to more than 130,000 customers after the hurricane moved through Monday.

Pepco had restored power to all customers just after 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31.

Chu, who lives in the area, said he appreciated Pepco employees’ commitment to restore safe and reliable service to customers.

Tom Kuhn, president of Edison Electric Institute, and Thomas H. Graham, president, Pepco region, also visited the crews.

“Our employees are devoted to our customers and do hard work in harsh conditions around the clock to restore power,” Graham said. “It is very gratifying to have acknowledgement of that dedication and, now that we have finished our job here, their willingness to leave their families to go now to help hurricane victims in other hard-hit areas.”

Now that Pepco has finished its restorations, crews are now joining other utility crews from across the United States and Canada as part of the industry’s Mutual Assistance Program, which helps restore power to hard-hit areas.

Kuhn noted that 60,000 workers have responded to restore power to about 9 million customers who lost service in storm. About 4.65 million customers remain without power.
