Scotland Recreation Center Ribbon Cutting Ceremony (PHOTOS)
Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett, County Council President Craig Rice and Councilmembers Roger Berliner, Marc Elrich and Nancy Floreen today joined residents of the Scotland community for a ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony for the Bette Carol Thompson Scotland Neighborhood Recreation Center.
The newly renovated center at 7700 Scotland Dr. in Potomac was renamed for Scotland native and community activist Bette Carol Thompson. Serving since 1990 in many volunteer positions such as the President of the Scotland Community Development, Inc. and the Scotland Advisory Committee, Thompson has dedicated herself to making the Scotland community a welcoming and safe community for all its residents.
“I am extremely happy to open this new center in the Scotland community,” said Leggett. “Renaming it in honor of Scotland native and longtime activist Bette Carol Thompson is a fitting tribute to her dedication and commitment to making this community a welcoming and vibrant neighborhood for its residents.”
The total project cost was $6.5 million and involved the complete demolition of the existing structure and construction of a new two-level structure that features a new gymnasium, two multi-purpose activity rooms, game room, weight and exercise room, spacious social hall and more. The facility was designed to comply with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) guidelines for LEED Silver certification.
“The first-class renovation project completed by our Department of General Services greatly improves the Center,” said Gabe Albornoz, Recreation Department Director. “The design offers greater opportunities to expand programming and continue building successful community partnerships that will benefit our residents.”
“It is an honor to fulfill the Executive’s commitment to deliver a modern, well-constructed and expanded recreation center,” said David Dise, General Services director. “Completely replacing the aged and inadequate facility, this new building will serve the Scotland community for many years to come.”
The architect for the project was Whitman, Requardt & Associates. The construction company was Keller Brothers, Inc.
