Rosemont Elementary Mourns (Photos & Video)

The Rosemont Elementary School community is mourning the loss of a popular, fourth grade student, D’Angelo Jayvon McMullen, who was pulled from a sediment pond in Gaithersburg on Jan. 13 after he fell through some ice where he was playing with his brother and another friend. Police say the 10-year-old boy was submerged in the water for approximately 25 minutes before he was transported to the hospital.
Sadly, D’Angelo died at the hospital.
Another fourth grade student, also a Rosemont student, survived the fall into the cold and murky water, as well as D’Angelo’s older brother, a middle school student at Forest Oak.
Principal Jimmy Sweeney said extra counselors are at the school today for the students and “grown ups” who are mourning.
At Rosemont, DeAngelo was known to many as “DJ,” an energetic, popular and responsible student who liked science, according to his principal.
“For those of you who knew D’Angelo, we ask that you remember and celebrate his smile and indeed his kind words,” said Sweeney in a Jan. 14 letter to parents. “We, too, will cherish his zeal for knowledge and how he loved to impart this to others. For those of you who did not know D’Angelo, we ask that you respect our sadness and support the Rosemont Elementary School with your understanding.”
“I know you join me in extending our heartfelt sympathy to D’Angelo’s family,” Sweeney concluded in the letter addressed to Rosemont families, adding that funeral arrangements would be shared when they were received.
The McMullen family has released a statement through the Montgomery County Police Department: “We would like to thank all of our family, friends, and the community for their support during this difficult time. Please respect our privacy while our family grieves the loss of our very special child.”
