Community Came Out for Sunday’s Bankshot Shoot-Around in Rockville
Sunday’s Bankshot Shoot-Around in Rockville Well Attended
The overcast skies did not keep the community from coming out to the Mattie Stepanek Park in King Farm for Sunday’s all-inclusive Bankshot Shoot-Around. The National Association for Recreational Equality (“NARE”) sponsored Sunday’s event for community members with or without autism, ADHD and other physical or cognitive challenges. The goal was to provide sports and recreational activities for all community members, to provide a fun bridge amongst the communities.
City leaders and other officials in attendance included City Manager Rob DiSpirito, Rockville Councilmembers Mark Pierzchala and Beryl Feinberg, Rockville Recreation and Parks Director Tim Chestnutt, and NARE Board Member Larry Sherman. Also, Dr. Reeve Brenner, the creator of Bankshot Basketball and Rockville resident attended Sunday’s Shoot-Around.
NARE’s mission is to fulfil the recreational needs of those who are physically and cognitively challenged. The participation of children with disabilities in sports and recreational activities promotes inclusion, minimizes de-conditioning, optimizes physical functioning and enhances overall well-being.
NARE believes participation in recreational activities is the context in which people form friendships, develop skills and competency, express creativity, achieve mental and physical health, and determine meaning and purpose in life.
Bankshot Basketball is a family sport because players do not play against one another but along-side one another. The sport does not include running and is not aggressive, so it is appropriate for wheelchair players, the physically and cognitively challenged, grandparents, children and everyone else at the same time.
