Rockville Students to Participate in a Diversity Leadership Workshop

UPDATED Students in Rockville have a chance to participate in an annual workshop that promotes a dialogue about diversity, social justice, and conflict resolutions skills.

City of RockvilleThe 10th Annual Diversity Leadership Workshop, scheduled for March 28 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., is hosted by the city’s Human Rights Commission and aims to teach students how to “consider diverse populations when addressing difficult situations.”

“This workshop is designed to give students the tools to promote an inclusive school community which can, in some instances prevent isolation, build confidence and trust and increase positive attitudes between peers,” Marylou Berg, communication manager for the city of Rockville, wrote in an email to MyMCMedia.

According to a news release, the curriculum is based on the award-winning National Coalition Building Institute Prejudice Reduction Workshop and other organizations.

“Our city is increasingly diverse, often in ways that go unnoticed. Diversity is not just a matter of race, religious, gender, etc. Today it encompasses much more including social /economic variance, lifestyle differences, political and social differences, LGBTQ, physical/mental health differences, etc. We must be constantly assessing how our community is changing and empowering young people to promote social justice and conflict resolution approaches when challenges as a result of diversity arise,” Berg wrote.

The workshop is open to students living in Rockville; attending Rockville high schools or Montgomery College-Rockville Campus. It will take place at the Twinbrook Community Center, 12920 Twinbrook Parkway in Rockville.
