Rockville Joins More Than 300 Other Cities in Supporting Paris Climate Agreement

Rockville City Mayor Bridget Donnell Newton and the Rockville City Council adopted a resolution at their recent meeting in support of the Paris Climate Agreement to reinforce reducing greenhouse gas emissions, according to a news release.

This resolution comes amid President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Accord earlier this month.

The Paris Climate Agreement was established to bring nations together with a common goal of combating the threat of climate change.

The City of Rockville joins more than 1,200 other people and businesses who signed the “We Are Still In” letter in support of the Paris Climate Agreement.

The open letter states that, “we, the undersigned mayors, governors, college and university leaders, businesses, and investors are joining forces for the first time to declare that we will continue to support climate action to meet the Paris Agreement.”

Others who have signed include Montgomery County, Gaithersburg, Takoma Park, Maryland State Treasurer Nancy Kopp and Attorney General Brian Frosh.

The climate resolution adopted by Mayor Newton and the Rockville City Council recognizes the commitments made to climate change by the city’s leadership and states that the Mayor and Council will work with the community to create a Rockville Climate Action Plan.
