Rockville Hosts Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day

The City of Rockville and its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) partners will start the 2013 tax season with a free media and community event Friday, Jan. 25, 10 to 11 a.m. at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre at Rockville Civic Center Park, 603 Edmonston Dr. The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Kick Off highlights the importance of free tax help and access to banking, savings and financial education for low- to moderate-income residents provided by the VITA program.

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the importance of the VITA program in the lives of Rockville residents, how to file for the federal and state EITC exemptions, and Montgomery County’s Working Family Income Supplement. A light breakfast will be served and representatives from VITA partners and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will be available for networking and discussion.

The VITA partnership includes the following government and nonprofit organizations:

* The City of Rockville
* The City of Gaithersburg and “Bank On”
* Family Services, Inc. and affiliate, Coalition for the Advancement of Financial Education of Montgomery MD (CAFE)
* Maryland CASH Campaign
* Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services’ Community Action Agency
* Arbor Employment and Training
* Maryland Hunger Solutions

Use of the EITC has grown from 41,168 Montgomery County families in tax year 2006 to 51,617 in tax year 2010. However, it is estimated that one in five eligible families do not file for the credit.
