Rock Creek Extreme Cleanup (Photos)

Dozens of volunteers collected litter and hauled away tires and other debris from the Twinbrook portion of Rock Creek Park on April 5 during the Rock Creek Conservancy’s annual Rock Creek Extreme Cleanup. This site was organized by Twinbrook Partnership, a private neighborhood and business alliance promoting the Twinbrook community in Rockville.

Volunteers hauled an estimated 30 bags of trash and other debris from the park. The effort was conducted in a wooded area off Fishers Lane.

“The positive impact we’ve been able to make on improving and protecting Twinbrook’s local watershed has been phenomenal,” said Ashley Lambdin, executive director of the Twinbrook Partnership.

“Helping the Partnership to organize this cleanup of Rock Creek Park in Twinbrook is a natural extension of our commitment to the Twinbrook community and directly reflects JBG’s respect for the environment,” said Rod Lawrence, a partner of The JBG Companies, a member of the Twinbrook Partnership. “We’re in our third year participating in this event, and it can’t be stressed enough that this good work would not be possible without the commitment of our volunteers.”

Rock Creek Conservancy Executive Director Matthew Fleischer noted, “This is our 6th Annual Rock Creek Extreme Cleanup, and having the Twinbrook Partnership support our effort is invaluable to the work we do and the success of the event. We have cleaned 12,000 bags of litter out of the creek in the past five years and this year builds on that success.”

The Extreme Cleanup is part of the Alice Ferguson Foundation’s Potomac River Watershed Cleanup that takes place across four states and the District of Columbia in April. The effort helps keep trash out of the Potomac River, the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.
