Robin Ficker Declares Candidacy in the 2018 Race for County Executive
Boyds resident Robin Ficker, a Republican, is running for the office of Montgomery County Executive in the 2018 election.
Ficker filed his paperwork at the Board of Elections offices on Tuesday, the first day candidates in the 2018 Gubernatorial Primary Election could file. He’s the first candidate to file his paperwork in the 2018 race for the office of county executive.
You may remember Ficker was behind the term limits amendment that passed overwhelmingly last year restricting county council members and the county executive to three consecutive terms. He also ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 2016.
When asked why he was running for the office of county executive now, Ficker said because Montgomery County needs someone who can deliver.
“I delivered on term limits,” he said, noting that he also helped lead a charter amendment in 2008 limiting property tax increases. When asked how many times he has run for elected office before, he said, “obviously, not enough.”
Ficker, who is 73 years old and a local attorney, also touts his history in Montgomery County.
He was born in Takoma Park and attended Montgomery Blair High School. He describes himself in three words: “Montgomery County guy,” noting that he’s lived here his entire life.
As for the 2018 election, he plans to take part in the campaign finance fund and said residents can meet him this month at the Gaithersburg St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 11, where he will be thanking voters for passing term limits and talking about his campaign for county executive. His campaign colors are green and white and his social media accounts read, “Robin delivers for you.”
If elected, he says, he will limit property tax increases to the rate of inflation and he will work for improvements to I-270 as well as insist on adequate infrastructure and schools for new development.
As for his competition in the race for county executive, he said, he’s looking forward to the debates.
