Residents From All Over the County Celebrate MLK Day of Service (PHOTOS)
UPDATED: MLK Day of Service in Montgomery County ended with a special tribute at The Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda with music presentations and remarks from Montgomery County elected officials. If you missed the live show, you will have a chance to watch on Montgomery Channel 21 on Jan. 22 at 9 p.m., Jan. 23 at 5 p.m., Jan. 24 at 2 and 9 p.m., Jan. 25 at 5 p.m. and Jan. 26 at 10 p.m.
It was a day of service to honor Martin Luther King, Jr’s birthday.
Montgomery County held its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Jan. 19 where residents had several opportunities to volunteer on family-friendly service projects.
“Today is a day of service in Montgomery County. We are fortunate to have so many people to come out to participate, not take a day off on Martin Luther King day but really to take a day on to provide services to our fellow citizens and residents,” said Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett.
In Gaithersburg, more than 200 volunteers visited Seneca Creek Community Church to work on different activities to help others.
“I think it’s important that we as a community just come together, to work together, to collaborate,” said Jeannette Cochran, executive pastor at Seneca Creek Community Church.
In Silver Spring, there was a high turnout at the Silver Spring Civic Center where volunteers could donate new and gently used sleeping bags, blankets and new socks for the homeless.
A volunteer fair organized by Montgomery County’s Volunteers Center at the Marriott Hotel in North Bethesda had 2,000 people working on more than 60 projects such as thank you cards for troops overseas; tissue paper flowers for teachers, coaches, and caregivers; move in kits to help people transition out of homelessness; making blankets and scarves for Montgomery Hospice, among others.
“Martin Luther King Day is known as a day of service and is to give families and kids of all ages a way to get out, get involved on this day and find out services that they can do all throughout the year,” said Molly Callaway, director of the Montgomery County Volunteer Center.
