Republican Party Calls Elrich’s Executive Order ‘Political Stunt’ That Risks Safety of Residents
The Montgomery County Republican Party showed dissaproval for County Executive Elrich’s recent executive order, calling it a “political stunt.”
On Monday, Elrich issued ‘The Promoting Community Trust Executive Order,’ which reaffirms current policy that prohibits county agengies from asking people about their immigration status or cooperating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. According to a statement from Elrich’s office, the executive order also “improves community security by ensuring immigrants and otherwise vulnerable communities can engage with county departments.”
The Republican party responded saying this order would make the county less safe.
In a press release, County Republican Party Chairman, Alexander Bush, said, “If you take politics out of the decision, it quickly becomes apparent that one government agency refusing to share relevant information about law enforcement activities with another government agency makes no sense.”
Chairman Bush continued, “Elrich’s political stunt is all about opposing a President he hates, even at the risk of the safety of Montgomery County residents.”
According to the local Republican party, ICE has made it clear that their enforcement operations are prioritized to focus on criminals, not peaceful undocumented individuals.
This press release was sent out a day after Elrich signed the executive order that would impede any ICE officers from receving assistance from local montgomery agencies.
