Repairs Completed at the Site of Water Main Break in Silver Spring

Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) completed repairs on the 16-inch water main in Silver Spring. All lanes have been reopened to traffic and will stay open through morning rush hour on Aug. 4.

The 76-year-old pipe, on Colesville Road at Georgia Avenue, ruptured on July 29 and wasted approximately 5 million gallons, WSSC official said.

WSSC crews replaced a large section of the pipe that curved around Colesville Road and Georgia Avenue and repaired several other utilities located in the area of the water main.

Paving is scheduled to begin after morning rush hour on Tuesday and is expected to be finished by the end of the day.

According to a news release, to complete paving, the right northbound lane on Colesville Road will be closed along with the right southbound lane on Georgia Avenue. Road repairs are also needed on the center northbound lane on Colesville Road. Crews will close that lane for part of the day. Appropriate traffic control will be in place for the safety of the crews and drivers.

All lanes on Colesville Road and Georgia Avenue are expected to be open in time for rush hour on Wednesday morning, WSSC official said.
