University of Maryland’s investigation into the death of football player Jordan McNair has been taken over by the university’s Board of Regents, according to a statement from the regents issued Friday afternoon.

The board also is taking over a commission investigating the culture of the Terps’ football program, which has been led by coach D.J. Durkin since 2016.

The regents met Friday over a 4-hour conference call.

The regents’ other plans will be revealed next week, according to the statement.

McNair died of heatstroke during a practice May 29. In the last week, news reports, particularly from ESPN, have depicted a toxic culture at the College Park institution where coaches humiliated and abused players routinely.

The board also asked the Office of the Attorney General to represent UMCP and USM on any and all legal claims related to Mr. McNair’s death.
